One of the best things I have learned about parenting is the value of predicting and preparing. It is actually something I have learned through this journey of becoming a mom with a camera – I believe the key to capturing moments is to predict and prepare your camera before you even start shooting. I also believe the key to successful parenting is predict and prepare for behaviors that may need a little more direction or guidance. With that said… Emerson is my “planner” – every day she has to do something… be somewhere.. or play with someone. This might throw me over the edge this summer…. so for the past month – I have requested that she not ask for playdate… (because it was really starting to drive me batty).. .I told her… “Trust me.. I am doing EVERYTHING in my power to plan fun times for you”… and so I stopped telling her when we had something planned and have filled her days with surprise playdates. I then say… “See… trust me… I have your back… I am working hard to make sure you see your friends as much as I can”. I have seen a HUGE shift in her need to ask for something fun to do. She seems to have found confidence that I am on her side and will plan as much as I can – so that her days are not spent in front of a TV or spent alone – but instead filled with the joy that only a childhood summer of fun should know
