Unexpected Beauty 2012 – a 52 week project

Come join our project on Facebook – www.facebook.com/UnexpectedBeauty2012
How many of you have taken that quiz where you read a sentence and then they ask you what was wrong with it?  You go back and read it again and you still can’t figure it out?  Then, after a couple of more tries, you finally realize that the word “The” was in the sentence twice in a row.
Life tends to be like that sentence – there are so many times that we overlook the obvious in life.  Oftentimes we overlook everyday beauty because we are in a rush to get somewhere. Or because our minds are clouded with to-do lists. Or maybe we overlook something that holds great beauty because it is simply something that we see every day and take for granted.
Beauty is everywhere around you – it is  the teenage brother I see who comes to pick up his little sister from school and wears her neon pink sequin backpack on his back as he walks her home.  It is at 8:45 in the morning as I am driving home from dropping my daughter off at school and seeing a korean grandmother riding her grandson’s bike home after she took him to school. These are moments that stop me in my tracks.
Life is moving forward at an incredible pace.  As I reflect on the past, there were
moments like the birth of my two children that delivered so much emotion.  It was hard to really be in the moment. Hard to take in each second – no matter how hard I tried, no matter how many photos I took. As a photographer and more importantly as a mother, I realize it is time to breathe.
Unexpected Beauty is a project that I started to challenge myself and other photographers to try and take a simple moment in time and see it for its beauty.  Maybe it’s a beautiful sunset – one that normally you keep driving.   This time, I  urge you to stop the car and absorb that moment. Perhaps it’s a fresh snowfall before the children start their snowball fights.   Maybe it is their footprints in that fresh snow fall  that you can capture.
Challenging your eye to look  beyond the obvious and see………. Unexpected Beauty.
CONGRATULATIONS WEEK #1 Winner – Janelle Keys  www.picturethisgraphics.blogspot.com
I love this shot for so many reasons. I wonder ..are those  the remnants of a wish blown from a dandelion or tiny bugs dancing in the afternoon light. Gorgeous Capture!

Congratulations Week #2 winner – Wendy Rakvica

“This is my 5yr old chocolate lab, Duke. His love and dedication to my family, and especially me is always apparent and right here in this image he is on the top of the stairs being blocked of by the baby gate waiting for me with his cute little nose under the banister trying to get as close to me as he can ♥” – Wendy Rakvica  https://www.facebook.com/pages/Wendy-Rakvica-Photography/255524837826023

I adore this image – it speaks volumes to the dedication a dog has for his family. Patiently he waits for his true love to return.

Sometimes the unexpected beauty comes with the words attached to a photo. This photo gave me goosebumps when I read the Caption

“Never considered beauty in waiting, especially on a daughter that sits in an orphanage in India.” – Synergy Photography
